Shutdown Turnaround Management Professional

Addressing a Critical Training Gap

Shutdowns, turnarounds, and outages (STOs) are among the most complex, costly, and high-stakes operations in industry. Yet, there is currently no standardized training or certification program for managing these events in Canada. To address this critical skills gap, PEMAC is developing the Shutdown and Turnaround Management Professional (STMP) education and certification program.

Industries across the world are facing increasing pressure to maintain critical infrastructure reliability while managing workforce shortages, rising project complexity, supply chain challenges, and the retirement of experienced STO professionals. As organizations invest in sustaining and modernizing industrial operations, the need for standardized, practical shutdown and turnaround training has become increasingly important.

Program Vision

  • Industry-leading peer-developed curriculum that will provide standardized knowledge
  • Six Courses addressing all aspects of STO project management including: planning, scheduling, risk management, budgeting, quality control, contract management and execution
  • Culminating with the development of a capstone project to apply learned concepts in a practical setting, ensuring real-world relevance
  • A flexible, scalable curriculum that can be applied to small shutdowns to large-scale turnarounds
  • Multi-sector relevance including: oil & gas, power generation, utilities, mining & metals, chemical & petrochemical, pulp & paper, pharmaceutical & food processing, other manufacturing, and marine & shipping organizations
  • National certification and recognition

This course is designed for:

  • Maintenance Managers & Supervisors

STMPC Certification

Completing the six courses in the program is a permanent accomplishment. You will receive a certificate of completion from the teaching institution where you studied that does not expire.

The STMPC certification from PEMAC, is an education based certification that provides the right to use the letters "STMPC" behind your name. The STMPC Certification is distinct from the education program, and is awarded to those who have successfully completed, or received credit through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR), for the six courses of the STMP education program and who maintain the requirements of certification. A separate application to PEMAC is required.
