PEMAC chapters are where members connect—sharing practical experience, building skills, and learning from one another. Supporting those local communities is the focus of Gian‑Paul Simpson, who took on the volunteer role of National Chapter Steward in August 2025.
This role exists to make it easier for chapters to operate, collaborate, and stay connected to PEMAC’s broader direction—while still reflecting the needs of their local members.
Background: Experience That Reflects the Community
Gian‑Paul brings hands‑on experience from several industries, including mining, rail, ironworks, and communications. He previously served as Principal Advisor, Asset Risk & Assurance at Rio Tinto and has contributed to work with the Standards Council of Canada.
His background centres on:
- Managing asset risk in real operating environments
- Building governance structures that teams can actually use
- Supporting people and teams to make informed decisions
This perspective helps him relate to the day‑to‑day realities PEMAC members face—whether in maintenance, reliability, or asset management roles.
What the Chapter Steward Role Means in Practice
The National Chapter Steward role is about supporting volunteers who run chapters—not directing them. It provides a consistent contact point and a way to share what’s working across the country.
Gian‑Paul focuses on:
- Helping chapters plan
Aligning local events and activities with PEMAC’s national calendar
Supporting simple, practical planning approaches - Connecting chapters to each other
Sharing ideas that have worked in other regions
Making it easier to collaborate on events or speakers - Providing guidance when needed
Offering support on governance or structure
Acting as a point of contact for questions or challenges
A Community Resource
If you’re already involved in a chapter—or thinking about joining or starting one—the National Chapter Steward is there to support you.
Gian‑Paul’s approach is practical and member‑focused: listen first, understand what’s needed, and help connect people to solutions that already exist within the community.
