Monitoring and Understanding the Health of our Wind Turbine Gearboxes
Presenters: Marius Stoian and Edwin Fung from ENMAX
In December of 2016 the Condition Monitoring System at the Kettles Hill Wind Farm came online. The installation included both the Bently Nevada vibration monitoring system as well as the GasTops oil particle detection system. Both of these features are now being monitored by GE Bently Nevada remote monitoring as part of a yearly service contract which includes monthly reports as well as monthly meetings with stakeholders.
The project was constructed and commissioned through the collaboration of the owner (Kettles Hill Wind Energy, Inc.) and the OEM service provider (Vestas-Canadian Wind Technology, Inc.). The remote monitoring and analysis reporting is provided through an agreement with GE Bently Nevada. The two condition based monitoring systems provides ENMAX (as well as Vestas) the ability to trend and predict failures in the ENMAX V80 fleet. It has assisted maintenance crews with directing their attention to problem areas before they become catastrophic.
Three potential gearbox failures (one repeat offender) have already been identified and have been repaired. Planning has already been put in place to verify additional findings reported by the condition based monitoring system.
Reliability in Focus – “A Team Sport”
Presenter: Rob Arseneau, Suncor Energy
What does it mean when we refer to reliability as a team sport? To understand this statement we break it down into the defined terms. The term “team” infers that there are 2 or more players (roles) working together with a common goal. The term “sport” infers that there are skills required to meet the goal. This presentation will show how Suncor approaches Reliability as a “Team Sport” by understanding the skills and actions required to achieve our reliability goal and the roles required in executing these skilled actions that enable reliable assets.
Contributing to Reliability through skilled actions requires a deep understanding of what reliability is, why it’s important and which skills and actions belong to each role. The ability to differentiate between reliable actions as they relate is critical in how each role contributes to Reliability.
The basis of Reliability as a team sport for Suncor is the understanding of what is a reliable action is and which actions are the responsibilities of each role in an effort to achieve a common goal.
Marius Stoian is a Senior Engineer with ENMAX Energy Corporation and has over 20 years of engineering experience, involved in various aspects of reliability and maintenance, repairs and design in oil and gas, power generation and petrochemical industries. He has extensive working and demonstrated skills in commissioning, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of rotating equipment as Gas and Steam Turbines, Generators, Compressors and Balance of Plant Equipment. Prior joining ENMAX he worked with Siemens across Canada and the United States, and with Oltchim in Romania. Assisted various customers with development and implementation of rotating equipment reliability best practices, policies, procedures and guidelines, including CMMS programs. Delivered practical and complex machinery troubleshooting and repairs in field and shop. Marius is a Mechanical Engineer from Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Romania and is a registered Professional Engineer with APEGA. He also holds CMRP and OMA designations. Marius enjoys spending time with the family, rock climbing, golfing and playing soccer.
Rob Arseneau is a corporate reliability specialist working with Suncor Energy in their technical centre of excellence.
In his role, Rob is accountable for developing and enabling the use of company-wide reliability standards. Through his partnership with Suncor’s operations, Rob supports the rigorous application of the standards, as well as procedures and work practices to help achieve industry leading performance for Suncor.
Rob also leads Suncor’s Asset Integrity Technical Excellence Network – a team of reliability professionals from across the company who are focused on driving best practices and solutions.
Prior to his current role, Rob spent 27 years in heavy industry. In addition to his work as a mechanical engineer, he has also worked as a millwright, machinist and welder.
He is involved in SMRP body of Knowledge development in Reliability.
Rob is a graduate of Monash University with a Diploma in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in Reliability Engineering. He also holds diplomas in Power Engineering - Class 3 and Maintenance Management.
Hailing from Canada’s beautiful East Coast, Rob and his wife live in Calgary with their three sons.
