Topic: Who’s on First – The Sponsor!

Presenter:  Laura Kennett
Director, Enbridge Technology & Information Business Services for Liquids Pipelines

Are you a frustrated and confused Asset Manager, Maintenance Manager, Project Manager or Program Manager because there is a lack of clarity on who is really the decision-maker?  If you’re needing to commiserate with other frustrated comrades, this 1938 play by Abbott and Costello will bring you some comic relief while highlighting a persistently annoying gap in role clarity:   Who is the real Sponsor of the work?  What is the Sponsor’s role? And, is the Sponsor is the same as the Asset Manager?   "Who’s on first. What's on second. And I Don’t Know is on third!"  These three simple sentences from Abbott and Costello’s classic skit may appear puzzling because they begin with questioning words but lack question marks, but these sentences lead us to dig into role clarity.  Join Laura Kennett on a journey to understand why the Sponsor is not only important for success, but essential.  Laura will provide first-hand guidance to asset and maintenance practitioners on recognizing a good Sponsor or surviving a bad one and the skills and behaviours Sponsors should exhibit to ensure the "right" work is being sanctioned and supported.

About the Presenter:

Laura Kennett—P.Eng., PMP—knows who holds the power over the work: the Sponsor!  Currently a director in Enbridge’s Technology & Information Services team who looks after Enbridge’s Liquids Pipelines business unit, Laura has been at the leading edge of sponsoring unique multimillion-dollar liquid pipeline projects throughout Canada and the United States. Over the past 22 years she has lived in the shoes of operations, facility maintenance and projects, and is acutely tuned to the role the Sponsor holds.  Laura has a Master’s in Engineering and Technology Management and a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering. She is certified in asset management from the Institute of Asset Management and is a Fellow with the Energy Futures Lab in Alberta. In addition to pipeline integrity management, Laura has also worked in industrial plant maintenance in the Alberta oil sands and industrial maintenance and environmental operations in the steel industry in Edmonton. Her forte is in cross-silo collaboration and she works with groups that have varying degrees of expertise and maturity in asset and maintenance management. She understands how the key role of the Sponsor can have a direct influence on the realization of benefits.
