Topic: Retrofit of Condition Based Monitoring (CBM) Technology into an Aging Facility
Sherritt Fort Saskatchewan has been operating for more than 50 years and continues to use much of its original infrastructure and production equipment. Modern condition-based monitoring (CBM) technologies were not in the picture 50 years ago. So how do we cost-effectively implement CBM technology to address risk, provide advanced indication of failure, and improve the reliability of our operation? This presentation will introduce three case studies of applying CBM to aging assets: infrared thermography and continuous surface temperature monitoring for high-risk refractory lined furnace piping; vibration and process condition monitoring for a 50-plus-year-old steam turbine; and ultrasound technology to improve bearing lubrication practices for rotating equipment.
Speaker: Steven Ratchford, Reliability Superintendent, Sherritt International
Steve Ratchford is a 12-year Red Seal Interprovincial Millwright whose career has spanned the following industries: power production, mining, oil & gas, and, most recently, metals refining. His current role is on Sherritt’s Asset Management – Reliability team, where he works collaboratively to implement and perform condition-based monitoring analysis throughout the refinery operation. He is currently enrolled in the MMP Certification through Northern Lakes College.
